BWRT®, a modern therapy for deep change

BWRT® (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy) is a therapeutic approach created by Terence Watts in the United Kingdom, designed to change certain automatic brain reactions linked to anxiety, trauma, phobias, addiction, and some persistent emotional patterns.

BWRT® is an innovative, gentle, and effective method that eases what weighs on you, undoes the blocks, and helps you feel better, without reliving your traumas.

Why some reactions persist despite every effort

You understand rationally that you’re safe, and yet something in you keeps reacting as if the danger were still there.

Your thoughts run in circles, your body tenses before you’ve even had time to think. Certain situations trigger a reaction you can’t control, despite all your efforts to change.

This isn’t a lack of willpower. The brain and the emotional system can keep reacting automatically, long after a difficult situation has passed. It’s precisely on these automatic mechanisms that BWRT® steps in

What is BWRT®?

BWRT® (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy) is a therapeutic approach created in 2011 by British therapist Terence Watts.

This approach rests on the idea that certain emotional reactions fire automatically, before you’ve even had time to think.

BWRT® steps in directly on these automatic reactions to change them gently, without trying to erase memories or suppress emotions.

What makes this approach distinctive is that it acts at a very early stage of brain processing, before the emotional system fully comes into play. This makes it possible to work on the source of the reactions, rather than on their consequences.

No hypnosis, no suggestion, no need to recount what you’ve been through. Only practitioners certified by the BWRT Institute are authorised to practise it.

How does BWRT® work?

BrainWorking Recursive Therapy® (BWRT) is a neuroscience based approach, recognised for its effectiveness with anxiety, phobias, post-traumatic stress, depression, and a lack of confidence and self-esteem.

Connexions neuronales

When you go through a difficult experience, the brain creates automatic associations to protect you. Over time, these associations can become overwhelming or ill-suited to your current situation, even when the source of the problem belongs to the past.

BWRT® works precisely in the very short space between the trigger and the automatic reaction. By stepping in at this stage, it becomes possible to change certain emotional and behavioural associations that keep the difficulty in place.

Unlike many therapies that work on intellectual understanding or the reprocessing of memories, BWRT® acts directly on the brain’s automatic mechanisms. This is why changes can be seen within a few sessions, where other approaches sometimes require years of work.

A session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. It takes place online via Zoom, in French or English. You have nothing to prepare, nothing to recount if you’d rather not. You simply follow the process guided by the practitioner.

What BWRT® can help with

BWRT® is particularly suited to situations where emotional reactions feel out of control, or resist despite work you’ve already done on yourself. It can be used in particular for :

Anxiety & Panic

Ease the constant state of alert and find peace of mind again.

Trauma & PTSD

Release the traumatic memories that still freeze you

Phobias & Fears

Neutralise the fears that limit your daily life

Grief & Loss

Go through the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or a chapter of life

What BWRT® is not

BWRT® is sometimes misunderstood. To avoid any confusion :

Ce que BWRT n'est pas

BWRT® is not hypnosis. You stay fully conscious and active throughout the process.

BWRT® is not based on suggestion. Nothing is imposed on you, no belief is passed on to you.

BWRT® is not EMDR. Both approaches work on automatic reactions, but BWRT® steps in at an earlier stage of brain processing and requires no eye movements or reprocessing of memories.

BWRT® does not erase memories. It changes the automatic response linked to certain triggers, not the memory itself.

BWRT® is not talk therapy. You don’t need to recount everything for the work to be effective.

BWRT® does not replace medical care. For some situations, medical or psychiatric support remains necessary alongside it.

Why I bring BWRT® into my work

I was especially drawn to BWRT® for its ability to work directly on certain automatic reactions that intellectual understanding alone isn’t enough to change.

In my practice, I’ve seen that many people understand perfectly well what’s happening within them, yet keep reacting the same way. They’ve often already tried other approaches, done serious work on themselves, and still something resists. BWRT® makes it possible to step in where other approaches reach their limits, by acting directly at the source of the automatic mechanisms.

I bring it into a broader form of support, combined with ICF coaching, Compassionate Inquiry®, and Time Line Therapy®, according to what each situation calls for. The goal isn’t to apply a method, but to find what truly matches what you’re going through.

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

Retrouvez ci-dessous les réponses à vos questions les plus fréquentes :

Does BWRT® work for anxiety ?

Yes. BWRT® is particularly effective for anxiety, working directly on the brain’s automatic responses before they fully fire. Many people notice a significant drop in their symptoms within a few sessions.

What’s the difference between BWRT® and EMDR?

BWRT® and EMDR are two distinct approaches. EMDR uses eye movements to reprocess traumatic memories. BWRT® steps in at an earlier stage of brain processing, without requiring you to relive the memories or explain their content. The two can complement each other depending on the situation.

Is BWRT® a form of hypnosis ?

No. BWRT® isn’t based on hypnosis or suggestion. It takes place in full awareness and involves no altered state. You stay active and clear-headed throughout the process.

How many BWRT® sessions are needed?

It depends on the situation and the person. For some targeted issues, changes can be seen within one to three sessions. Other situations call for more gradual work. A first conversation makes it possible to assess what would suit your case.

Does BWRT® work for trauma?

BWRT® is used to work with certain reactions linked to traumatic experiences, without needing to recount or relive the events. It acts on the automatic responses associated with the trauma, with an approach that respects each person’s pace.

Can BWRT® be done online?

Yes. Sessions take place easily online via Zoom, with the same effectiveness as in person. It’s the main format offered, which makes it possible to support people in Switzerland, France, Belgium, and everywhere across the French-speaking world.

Is BWRT® officially recognised?

BWRT® is an approach developed by Terence Watts in the United Kingdom. Only practitioners certified by the BWRT Institute are authorised to practise it. As with any therapeutic approach, results vary from one person and situation to another.

Is BWRT® suitable for addiction?

BWRT® can be used to work with certain compulsive and addictive behaviours by acting on the automatic mechanisms that keep them in place. It doesn’t replace medical care where that’s needed.

Testimonials

emotional dependen“BWRT changed my life three years ago. I resolved several problems that had always weighed on me. Now, whenever I notice a behaviour or anything else getting in the way of my happiness, I address it right away. Since I started BWRT, my life is gentle and beautiful, just as I wanted it. I can finally say that I’m happy.”

(Trust issues, emotional dependency.)

“I am convinced that a method as powerful as BWRT requires a skilled coach and therapist to apply it. Magali excels at asking the right questions and trusts her intuition to find the right moment to use BWRT. I experienced no side effects and I am certain it helped me break free from the vicious cycle of anxiety. In particular, it rid me of the physical symptoms of stress (heart palpitations), which was an immense relief. I highly recommend Magali, and it is reassuring to know she is there and ready to listen should I need her support again.”
